    Description

    Y
OU PROBABLY WON'T FIND THIS MAP ANYWHERE ELSE.  VERY FEW LEFT.
UP FOR AUCTION IS A FANTASTIC SCANNED REPRODUCTION OF A D-DAY (6 JUNE 1944) INVASION MAP OF OMAHA BEACH, NORMANDY. THE ORIGINAL WAS SCANNED AND THEN OFFSET PRINTED IN 1994 FOR THE 50
    TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE LONGEST DAY.  THIS MAP SHOWS THE LOCATION AND SIZES OF INLAND AND COASTAL MINEFIELDS, GUN POSITIONS, FIGHTING TRENCHES, BEACH OBSTACLES, ROADS AND THE TOWN OF VIERVILLE, NEAR WHERE THE MOVIE "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" WAS SUPPOSED TO BE.
ONE OF THE MANY INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THE MAP IS ON THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER - IT HAS THE CODEWORD APPLIED TO ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE NORMANDY INVASION - "BIGOT”.
MAPS LIKE THIS WERE ISSUED TO HIGGINS LANDING BOAT COXSWAINS SO THEY COULD LAND THEIR TROOP ON THE CORRECT BEACHES—THERE IS A SPECIAL NOTE TO COXWAIN OR NAVIGATOR.
THE PHOTO STRIP ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE MAP SHOWS THE BEACH HEAD AS YOU APPROACH THE BEACH AT WATER LEVEL.
THIS MAP SHOWS THE NORMANDY BEACH AREA FROM PONT DE LA PERCEE TO JUST WEST OF THE TOWN OF VIERVILLE SUR MER - BEACH AREAS CHARLIE, DOG GREEN, DOG WHITE AND DOG RED. THE SCALE OF THE MAP IS 1" = 220 YARDS OR 8" = 1 MILE.
THIS MAP IS AN EXACT SCAN OF ONE THE MAPS ACTUALLY  USED BY HIGGINS BOAT COXSWAINS ON D-DAY.  THE LITTLE BLACK SPOT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MAP ISN’T A HOLE IN THE MAP YOU GET - IT WAS A HOLE IN THE ORIGINAL THAT WAS SCANNED!  THERE IS EVEN AN OVERPRINT TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE MAP SHOWING THE DATE IT WAS UPDATED  - MAY 12!  THE BACK OF THE SHEET HAS INFORMATION ON BEACH GRADIENTS, CURRENTS, TIDAL STAGES AND A SUNLIGHT & MOONLIGHT TABLE.  THIS IS A FAITHFUL SCANNED REPRODUCTION OF THE REAL THING AND WILL ADD THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO ANY D DAY COLLECTION.  THE MAP WILL BE MAILED IN A CARDBOARD TUBE MAILER AND NOT FOLDED UP.  THE MAP MEASURES 24 INCHES ACROSS AND 18.75 INCHES TOP TO BOTTOM.
