First opened in 1896, the Perth Mint is Australia?s oldest operating mint, and since their split from the UK?s Royal Mint in 1970, their top exporter of gold and silver bullion. Internationally recognized for the incredible quality of their bullion coins (which they have been producing since 1931), they remain one of the world?s top bullion producers to this day.
The Gold Kangaroo was first introduced in 1986 as the mint?s first major modern gold bullion coin, however at the time it featured gold nuggets in honor of the nation?s major gold mines across the outback, and was thusly known as the ?Australian Gold Nugget.? In 1989, the mint decided to switch the design to the more recognizably Australian Kangaroo, which has remained on the coin ever since. Starting in 2015, the mint began producing the Pure Fine Silver investment version shown here, featuring slightly different design than their gold cousins. Though the Silver Kangaroo Coin had long been available from the mint as a collector?s proof coin, it wasn?t until just a few years ago that they upped the quality to an investment-grade .9999 purity level.
The coin features a Jody Clark-crafted 2015 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that is similar to his design of her as currently used on the British Sovereign and Coat of Arms Gold Coins from the Royal Mint on its obverse side. The coin?s reverse side features a design based on artist Stuart Devlin?s work on the Australian penny, which has been minted since 1938.
