Circumstances dictate that I have enjoyed these long enough, and it is time for them to journey further! Painted in John Edwin-Noble's classic style, which resemble stained glass windows with heavy outlines ~ These beautiful paintings are remarkable!!
Two large original watercolor and ink paintings by renowned UK Illustrator John Edwin-Noble. The first of the two pictures three English Pointers. The second painting depicts a Smooth Fox Terrier, a West Highland White Terrier, and an Irish Terrier. My best guess on these un-dated paintings is the 1910s - 1920s, judging by the style of the dogs at that time. Fuller furnishings were seen on Terrier dogs of the day in later years. Edwin-Noble made his mark in the upper left hand side of each painting, "Edwin Noble" within a box, very typical of his paintings and illustrations.
Frame size of each is 27.25" wide by 21.5" high. Image size is 14.75" wide by 9.25" high. Bright and rich colors, Edwin-Noble's inimitable style, no condition issues other than minor page yellowing from age, and there is a mark on the Pointer painting as shown, but it is outside of the border of the artwork itself, and could be completely covered if this painting was re-matted, as it could be cropped from sight.
Biography: (1876-1961) John Edwin Noble worked as Edwin Noble and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Subsequently he became instructor at Calderones School of Animal Painting and a lecturer on animal drawing and anatomy at the Central and Camberwell Schools of Arts and Crafts. Edwin Noble served as a sergeant in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps during World War I, where he was employed as an official war artist, depicting horses and mules in charcoal and watercolor. He seems to have worked exclusively as an animal artist and his characteristically emphatic outline gives his work a strongly decorative quality. Noble was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and a Fellow of the Zoological Society and exhibited widely from 1898 through 1930 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Fine Art Society.
Noble was best known for paintings such as this that were extremely illustrative in nature, and often resembled stained glass windows with the outlines he often used. His artwork adorned numerous books, children's books, and he was a particularly talented illustrator of animals of all kinds, and dogs in particular.
These paintings are offered in a Buy It Now for 99.99 with insured shipment within the USA. International sales would have to be quoted after packaged and weighed, but most likely would be prohibitively expensive.
Each of these is framed in a nice quality vintage wooden frame. Ideally, you would re-frame and use acid free materials, as the materials the paintings are currently housed in are completely original. The condition of each of the paintings is excellent, although there is some age toning to the paper, and some type of minor stain outside the artwork on the Pointer painting above the image as shown in the photographs.
Additional photographs can be provided of the backs, and etc, if needed to make a final decision.
I am hoping some great interest will be generated!
